This is the Duluth Birding Report for Friday, June 29, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The most recent birding news to come in has been of NORTHERN HAWK OWL and THREE-TOED WOODPECKER in Lake Co; BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in Carlton Co; WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL in the Sax-Zim Bog; RED CROSSBILL in Douglas Co, Wis; AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN in Duluth-Superior; and YELLOW RAIL, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW and GREAT GRAY OWL in Aitkin Co.
There has been a successful N Hawk Owl nesting in Lake Co, and now that the young have fledged from the nest, this location can now be given out without the potential for disturbance. It is along the W side of Lake Co Rd 2, 0.4 mi N of the Greenwood L public access, and at least one of the adults was still here as of June 23.
Also on the 23rd, a Three-toed Woodpecker was relocated on the Spruce Rd in Lake Co where one was found in early June. The Spruce Rd turns N off Minn Hwy 1, 14 mi NW of Co Rd 2, and the Three-toed was 1/2 mi from Hwy 1.
In Carlton Co a pair of Black-backed Woodpeckers has been seen as recently as June 22 along the Ditchbank Rd 1.5 mi W of Co Rd 7 -- Co Rd 7 turns N off Minn Hwy 210 at Sawyer, and the Ditchbank Rd turns W off 7, 3.5 mi N of 210.
About the only thing of interest reported in the Sax-Zim Bog recently were some White-winged Crossbills June 22 along Owl Ave or Co Rd 203, 1/2 mi S of Co Rd 52 -- Owl Ave turns S off 52, 5.5 mi W of Co Rd 7. (Unfortunately, no Great Gray Owls have been relocated in the Sax-Zim Bog recently.)
A Red Crossbill was found June 24 in Douglas Co, Wis, E of Solon Springs along the Sandman Rd, about 2 mi N of Co Rd A.
Some Am White Pelicans are apparently summering in the Duluth-Superior harbor area; a flock was seen again last weekend flying over the bay W of Park Pt.
In the McGregor marsh along Minn Hwy 65 in Aitkin Co, at least 4 Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows were heard yesterday evening, but only one Yellow Rail was heard: it was barely audible W of 65, 2 mi S of Hwy 210. And one Great Gray Owl is known to be present in Aitkin Co, but it is not often seen from any road; it was probably present yesterday evening several hundred yards S of Co Rd 18, 1/2 mi E of Pietz's Rd.
Although this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, since July is usually a slow month for birding in N E Minn there may not be an update on July 5 -- so that the next report might be 2 weeks from now on July 12. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota
