This is the Duluth Birding Report for Sunday, Sept 23, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
This Report is being updated today to update the sightings during the past 3 days of those rarities mentioned on last Thursday's Birding Report. These include RED-THROATED LOON, PACIFIC LOON, PARASITIC JAEGER, SABINE'S GULL, ARCTIC TERN and SHORT-EARED OWL. In addition to these, there were new reports this weekend of WHIMBREL, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, WILLET and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER.
A Red-throated Loon still mostly in breeding plumage was seen again on the lake side of Park Point out from the Recreation Area on both Saturday and today, and yesterday only a Pacific Loon was on the lake side of Park Point out from 31st St. Both loons may have been the same individuals seen at Park Point last weekend.
Parasitic and unidentified jaegers of various ages and morphs were seen Friday through today at various locations, mostly around the Superior Entry at the N tip of Wisconsin Point. At this same location a couple Sabine's Gulls were seen again on both Friday and today, but apparently not on Saturday. And still at the Superior Entry, both ad and imm Arctic Terns were relocated on Friday, but to my knowledge no one was able to find them again on Saturday or today.
A Short-eared Owl, possibly the same one seen at Park Point last weekend, flew S across the Superior Entry yesterday from Minn into Wis.
On Friday at Wisconsin Pt some Whimbrels flew by, and at Wisconsin Pt as well a Buff-breasted Sandpiper was seen both Friday and yesterday. Then at the 40th Ave West Erie Pier Area yesterday morning were a Hudsonian Godwit and a Willet, which were both quite unexpected.
Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on Sept 27. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota
Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members. For more
