This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 31, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Cty Rd 16 in central St. Louis County continued to be a good spot for birds this week, with sightings of 2 THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS, 2.1 and 2.2 miles E of the junction with 110, in the vicinity of Jenkins Creek. There have also been sightings of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS near the jct of 110 and 16; and a GREAT GRAY OWL was seen 2.4 miles west of 110.
In Duluth, an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was found by Peder Svingen on the 26th. The bird was first seen at the Superior Entry and later, in the Port Terminal area. Note that the report of this species earlier this winter was of a first-year bird. Also in Duluth, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen at 60th and London Road on the 30th. A LONG-TAILED DUCK has been in the Canal Park area all week, and 3 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were also there on the 24th. SNOWY OWLS were seen at 40th Ave west, at Connor's Point in Superior, and at mile marker 11 on Hwy 53. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Jean Duluth Road, 3.6 miles north of Martin Rd, at the St. Louis County Highway Dept. was re-found this week.
In Superior, Wisc., Shawn Putz found a juvenile, gray GYRFALCON on the 26th at Connor's Point, and up to 1500 gulls were present at the landfill, including GLAUCOUS GULLS, a few THAYER'S GULLS, and 1 or possibly 2 ICELAND GULLS.
North of Duluth, Jay Hamernick found SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on Cty Rd 4, 3 miles north of Cty Rd 49 or Three Lakes Road.
In Two Harbors, Jim Lind found 3 HARLEQUIN DUCKS in Agate Bay on the 29th. North of Two Harbors, Bob Russell reported SPRUCE GROUSE near the jct of the Spruce Road and Endless Waters Road, and a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen on Lake Cty Rd 2, 5.7 miles north of the White Pine Wayside.
In the Grand Marais area, an adult male HARLEQUIN DUCK was at Paradise Beach, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and a HOARY REDPOLL were coming to a feeder on the Croftville Road. Two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were seen on the Gunflint Trail, one near Cty Rd 50 (45 miles north of Grand Marais) and another, near the Seagull Guard Station (49 miles north).
