This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, June 26, 2003, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen on the 23rd along Pietz's Road north of Aitkin County Road 18 on a telephone pole a couple of hundred feet past the large wood pile on the east side of the road.

Peder Svingen found an EASTERN MEADOWLARK near Brighton Beach in Duluth on the 24th.

Reviewing from prior reports, the most recent GREAT GRAY OWL reports have been at the location above in Aitkin Cty and in the Sax-Zim area on Cty Rd 52 near Owl Ave and on Cty Rd 7 North of the Sax Rd. YELLOW RAILS, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, and LE CONTE'S SPARROWS are all relatively easy to hear in Aitkin Cty at McGregor Marsh at the Jct of Hwy 65 and Hwy 210.

PEREGRINE FALCONS nested this year on both of the high bridges over the St. Louis River and atop the Greysolon Plaza Building.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, July 3rd; however, if there is little to report, the tape may not be updated for a couple of weeks.

The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 728-5030, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape.
