This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A probable overwintering YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was found by Kim Eckert on the 27th along Skyline Parkway in Duluth, about 100 yards east of the entrance to Chester Bowl. Kim also relocated the bird on the 30th.
The adult GYFALCON in the Duluth harbor was relocated by Lane Ellwanger, Peder Svingen, and others at about 3:00 pm on January 29th on top of the Holcim elevator next to the Blatnik Bridge. Ben Wieland and Dale Yerger reported a juvenile GYRFALCON at 1:30 pm on the 28th at Canal Park, interacting with an adult PEREGRINE FALCON. Ben also reported an adult ICELAND GULL, a second-winter THAYER'S GULL, and a second-winter GLAUCOUS GULL at Canal Park. Chet Myers relocated the LONG-TAILED DUCK today in the shipping lane at Canal Park.
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were reported by several observers over the weekend in the Sax-Zim bog along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), about 2.5 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28) near the logging trail on the east side of the road. BOREAL CHICKADEES were reported by Lane Ellwanger on the 29th along the Admiral Road (CR 788) and along Owl Avenue. Ben Wieland and Molly Malacek found a Boreal Chickadee on the 29th along the Arkola Road (CR 52), about 0.5 mile east of Owl Avenue.
Ben and Molly also relocated the NORTHERN HAWK OWL along the McDavitt Road, and Chet Myers relocated the one along the Stone Lake Road today. Chris Elmgen reported the Hawk Owl along the Lavaque Road (CR 48) on the 27th, about 2 miles north of the Martin Road (CR 9). Linda and Doug Kincaid reported a Hawk Owl in Aitkin County on the 26th along CR 56 (390th St.), about 1.5 miles east of US Highway 169. They also found two SNOWY OWLS along CR 1, north of the diversion channel.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen northeast of Duluth on the 29th at the junction of the Homestead Road (CR 42) and the West Knife River Road.
