This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 24th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Several species of interest have been seen during the past week at Duluth's Park Point. A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was found on the 23rd by Shawn Zierman on the lake side far past the airport near the breakwall, and it was still present on the 24th. Janet Riegle found a RED KNOT lakeside on the 24th in a large mixed flock of shorebirds, halfway between the community center and the recreational area. An adult ARCTIC TERN was found by Kim Eckert on the 22nd at the 12th Street access. It was seen again on the 23rd, but was not reported on the 24th. RED-THROATED LOONS were seen throughout the week, with 17 found on the 24th by Kim Eckert and Mike Hendrickson at the Lafayette Square 31st Street access. Two WESTERN GREBES were also seen here on the 24th, and an EARED GREBE was present on the 22nd. An adult LITTLE GULL and an adult light morph PARASITIC JAEGER were found on the 23rd by Kim Eckert and others at 18th Street.
A PIPING PLOVER was found at Hearding Island on the 21st but has not been seen since. Up to 13 WHIMBRELS were at Hearding Island and at the 31st Street access on the 21st and 22nd, and a flock of 25 flew by Dedrick Benz at the 31st Street access on the 23rd. Conny Brunell found four WILLETS at Hearding Island on the 23rd. Sparky Stensaas found five SURF SCOTERS at 16th Street, and Dave Grosshuesch found a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER near the airport on the 23rd. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on the 22nd at the recreational area, and two or three were present on the 24th.
A male PAINTED BUNTING was found in eastern Lake County on the 19th and was present through the 23rd. It was not relocated on the 24th. The bunting has been coming to a feeder at 6420 Highway 61, about a half mile southwest of Lake County Road 6. Visitors are urged to use caution when pulling into the driveway from the highway.
An immature SUMMER TANAGER was seen at a feeder north of Duluth on the 21st and 22nd, but has not been relocated since. If interested in looking for the bird, contact Jim Lind for more information. Another SUMMER TANAGER was briefly seen on the 19th at a home north of Silver Bay.
Jan Green found a 2nd or 3rd summer THAYER'S GULL on the 20th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. Jan saw a PACIFIC LOON on the 17th at Bluebird Landing along Scenic Highway 61, but it has not been seen since. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen on the 20th along the MN Highway 61 expressway at the Isaacson Road, west of Two Harbors. Another mockingbird was seen on private land near the Encampment River on the 18th. Mike Steffes found at least five BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS on the 18th at Oberg Mountain in Cook County, and another five on the north side of Tettegouche State Park on the 21st.
