This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, July 30th, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A juvenile and two adult RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were found by Mike Hendrickson on the 19th along the railroad tracks in the Morgan Park neighborhood of west Duluth. Jan and Larry Kraemer reported several shorebird species at the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area on the 17th, including LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Five BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen on the 17th at the Two Harbors golf course.

With the breeding season wrapping up in northeastern Minnesota, early migrant passerines should begin to arrive along the North Shore. Mike Hendrickson saw a TENNESSEE WARBLER on the 29th along the Kent Road near the UMD campus.
