This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 11th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL along MN Highway 61 at Flood Bay was relocated on the 11th. Jeremy Ridlbauer reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 9th along MN Highway 61 west of Grand Marais at the Fall River. One was seen on the 7th along the Whyte Road, 2 miles east of the Stony River Forest Road. NORTHERN HAWK OWLS continue to be seen in the Sax-Zim Bog along CR 7, CR 133, the Sax Road (CR 28), the Nichols Lake Road, and along the Stone Lake Road. David Alexander saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 8th along US Highway 53, 1 mile north of the Melrude Road (CR 59). Dee Kuder saw one on the 5th along US Highway 53 south of Orr at mile marker 102.
Jan Green has heard a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL calling almost nightly along Old North Shore Road (CR 290) in Duluth Township. Six LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the 11th at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors.
Sparky Stensaas reported single BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS in the Sax Zim Bog on the 7th along the McDavitt Road (CR 233) 3.7 and 4 miles north of the Sax Road, and three BOREAL CHICKADEES at the Admiral Road (CR 788) feeders.
David Alexander saw a SHORT-EARED OWL in Aitkin County on the 4th along CR 1, about a half mile north of CR 21. Dave Bartkey and others saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 6th along CR 18 about a half mile west of Pietz's Road, one about 0.25 mile east of US Highway 169, and another along CR 5 just south of CR 18. They also saw ten SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along Kestrel Avenue (CR 16), 3 miles north of Tamarack, and one a mile south of Tamarack.
