This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 3rd, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A flock of 11 SPRUCE GROUSE was found by Mike Hendrickson on the 28th along Lake County Road 2, 1.5 miles north of the Sand River. Mike also found at least 13 BOREAL CHICKADEES along the Stony River Forest Road and a SPRUCE GROUSE along the Whyte Road east of the Stony River Forest Road. Abby Darrah saw eight LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 28th on the east side of Two Harbors, and she relocated the VARIED THRUSH in Ely on the 26th on Main Street across from the Pillow Rock historical marker.
Mike Hendrickson saw a flock of nine SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 27th along CR 7 about a mile north of the Arkola Road (CR 52), and a HOARY REDPOLL at the Morse feeders on the Blue Spruce Road. Abby Darrah saw a HOARY REDPOLL at the Admiral Road (CR 788) feeders, 3.7 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28).
A SNOWY OWL was found on the 28th by Tanya Barcikowski at the Park Point Recreational Area. Mike Hendrickson saw a SNOWY OWL in Superior and 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS on the 25th at the Superior landfill. Mike saw 200-300 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 1st in his yard in Smithville in west Duluth.
