This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 5th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The apparent GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL may still be present in the Duluth harbor but it has not been reported since the 1st at Canal Park. ICELAND GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and THAYER'S GULLS continue to be seen here and near the mouth of the Miller Creek at 27th Avenue West. A SNOWY OWL was seen on the 5th in the Duluth Harbor at Garfield Avenue and Railroad Street.
Chris Mansfield found a late RED-NECKED GREBE on the 1st on Lake Superior at 23rd Avenue East. The VARIED THRUSH at Pat Thomas's feeders at 6219 East Superior Street was seen as recently as the 3rd. Birders are welcome to look for the bird, but are asked to stay between the driveway and the back door and not venture beyond the back of the house while looking for the bird.
Harley Hanson found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 30th along MN Highway 61, 1.2 miles northeast of the Gooseberry River. It was relocated on the 4th along the park entrance road near the main parking lot for the visitors center. Paul Sundberg found a SNOWY OWL on the 4th at Artist's Point in the Grand Marais harbor. Warren Nelson also found a SNOWY OWL on the 4th in Aitkin County about three miles north of Aitkin at CR 1 and CR 22, and it was relocated on the 5th.
Mike Hendrickson and others found seven SPRUCE GROUSE on the 4th along Lake County Road 2, 1.5 miles north of the Sand River and they saw another along the unplowed Stony River Forest Road.
In Itasca County, Shawn Conrad found two BOREAL CHICKADEES and a BROWN CREEPER on the 2nd in the bog just north of Middle Creek along the Alder Road (CR 253). He also saw BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE along the Alder Road. Shawn saw a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE on the 30th along Clover Lane in Grand Rapids.
