This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 8th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Two MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were seen by Roger and Tammy Field on the 3rd in Tofte, Cook County at the Coho Café along MN Highway 61. A BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE is visiting a feeder in Grand Marais and anyone interested in looking for the bird should contact Laura Erickson by e-mail at chickadee@lauraerickson.com
A female VARIED THRUSH was reported by Butch Ukura on the 8th two miles north of Chisholm, at the junction of the McNiven Rd (St. Louis CR 66) and the Laitala Road (Balkan Township Road 7840). The homeowner Dave Olson welcomes birders but would like them to call 218-254-3431 beforehand.
A flock of 310 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen on the 2nd in Duluth Township along the West Knife River Road (CR 231), 0.7 mile west of the Homestead Road (CR 42). Norma Malinowski saw a flock of 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 5th in Ely by the wastewater treatment plant.
ICELAND GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and THAYER'S GULLS continue to be seen at Canal Park in Duluth. Deb Falkowski reported the first migrant NORTHERN SHOVELERS of the spring season on the 6th at Silver Lake in Virginia.
