This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 3rd, 2015 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS migrated in huge numbers along the North Shore and through Duluth on August 29th and September 1st. More than 13,700 were counted throughout the day on the 31st between counting sites at Hawk Ridge and Lester River, with additional evening counts of more than 10,200 in 2 hours by Peder Svingen at 25th Avenue East in Duluth, 9,500 in three hours by Jim Lind near Two Harbors, and more than 2,100 in one hour by Laura Erickson in Lakeside. More than 28,000 were counted at the Hawk Ridge/Lester River count on the 1st, representing the third highest count for Minnesota. Additional high counts on the 1st included nine RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, more than 12,800 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 21 SCARLET TANAGERS, 198 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, and more than 33,700 warblers of 19 species.
A total of 24 warbler species was seen by several observers at Park Point on the 3rd, including CONNECTICUT WARBLER and PINE WARBLER, as well a record high fall count of 22 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES found by Peder Svingen and Jan and Larry Kraemer at Southworth Marsh, and an impressive count of 22 TENNESSEE WARBLERS seen by Alex Lamoreaux. Peder also saw an early ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Southworth Marsh on the 2nd.
A first-cycle FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen by Jan and Larry Kraemer on August 29th at Park Point and Peder Svingen saw what was probably the same bird on September 1st at 25th Avenue East near the Perkin’s restaurant.
A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was found by Bill Tefft on August 31st at the Ely softball fields off MN Highway 1 on the south side of town.
