This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, August 7th, Sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Although GREAT GRAY OWLS are present in northern Minnesota all year 'round, they are seldom reported in late summer and early fall. However, Dan B. of Two Harbors saw one on August 4th in Lake County along the White Road, 4 miles east of the Stony River Forest Road. To reach this location, go north from Two Harbors on Lake County Road 2 for about 26 miles. Turn right on Forest Road 11 for about 1 mile, then turn left onto the Stony River Forest Road, and go about 8 miles to the White Road, and turn right for 4 miles.

Dan has also been seeing some shorebirds recently in Two Harbors, at Agate Bay, which is the main harbor in town. One place to look is among the rocks behind the old Coast Guard Station and Lighthouse where a BUFF- BREASTED SANDPIPER was present last week. Also seen there were GREATER YELLOWLEGS, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and LEAST SANDPIPERS.

In Duluth, the mud flats at the 40th Avenue West/Erie Pier area have also had some shorebirds recently. Last week Terry Wiens saw LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SANDERLINGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and LEAST SANDPIPERS there. Yesterday Tim Dawson saw a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER there. To reach this location, take the 40th Avenue West exit off of Interstate 35, cross over to the bay side of the freeway and park by the yellow gate just beyond the frontage road. Then walk down the gravel road which leads to the water impoundment. Shorebirds have been on the back left side of this impoundment, but they are reportedly hard to see because there is a lot of vegetation growing out on the mud flats.

About the only other birds of note reported recently in Duluth were Terry Wien's sightings of a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at the corner of Normanna and French River Road, and a NORTHERN CARDINAL at Chester Bowl.

Finally, note that our annual clean up of Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve will be held on Saturday, August 16, starting at 9:00 a.m. Please consider helping us out for an hour or two; all you need to bring is a pair of work gloves and a trash bag or two.

This tape will be updated weekly, each Thursday, now that I'm back from my summer tour schedule--unless something which needs to be reported is seen in the meantime. The next scheduled update of this tape will be on Thursday, August 14. If you have birds to report, call this tape at 218-525-5952 and leave your information after this message, or call me directly at 218-525-6930.
