This is the Duluth Birding Report for Febuary 13th.

The only changes from last weeks tape is that a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was sighted in Lake Co and also a Great Gray Owl along Lake Co. Rd. 2.

A Northern Hawk Owl was spotted along Lake Co. Rd. 2 at the Greenwood Lake Access area on Febuary 8. Also last weekend Jay Walter and Lynn Macal spotted a GREAT GRAY OWL 35 miles north of highway 61 along Lake Co. Rd 2. Jay & Lynn found a SPRUCE GROUSE between the Sand River area and the junction of Lake Co. Rd. 2 and Hwy. 1.

Sax Zim Bog area (45 miles NW of Duluth) had two sightings of GREAT GRAY OWLS. One seen Feb 8 on the Stone Lake Rd. (Co. Rd. 319) and the other was along Hwy. 7 North of Co. Rd. 52 (Arkola Rd) at the Malmberg Sod Farm on Feb. 8. Sax Zim also is good place to find BOREAL CHICKADEES especially along Co. Rd. 52 just east of the junction of 52 and Owl Ave. or Co. Rd. 202. This area is worth checking out for another GREAT GRAY OWL as well. Keep an eye out for WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS along this stretch where there have been many sightings.

Warren Nelson of Aitkin (Aitkin Co.) reported that SHARP-TAILED GROUSE are being seen along Co. Rd. 380 which is located by going North on Co. Rd. 5 off Highway 210. Co. Rd. 380 is on your left off Co. Rd. 5. Warren also reported that BOREAL CHICKADEES are being seen at the Rabi (sp?) Tree Farm on highway 200. The Tree Farm is located between Hill City and Jacobson on highway 200 or look for mile post 186. SNOW BUNTINGS are being found at two spots. One spot is along Co. Rd. 5 (off hwy. 210) near the junction with Co. Rd. 380 and the other is along Co. Rd 10 just north Palisade. Warren also mentioned that PINE GROSBEAKS, EVENING GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS are found at most feeders in and around Aitkin.

Near Duluth, a HOARY REDPOLL or possibly two HOARY REDPOLLS are frequent visiter to the Eagle Lake Feeder. Directions to go there is to go east on the Jean Duluth Rd. take a left on the Lismore Rd. take a right on Eagle Lake Rd and walk up Park Lane to the little brown log home with the feeders out front. This feeder is also good for both the PINE GROSBEAKS and EVENING GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS.

A second winter GLAUCOUS GULL is hanging out at the small fishing shack just a mile north of the Lakeview Castle on Scenic highway 61.

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen on Febuary 9 in the town of Two Harbors behind Judy's Cafe.

The SNOWY OWL is still being seen out in the bay between Port Terminal and Park Pt. The best spots to find the owl is at the loading dock at Port Terminal or at the public boat launch area in the park itself.

The next update will be Febuary 19th.
