This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 22nd, 1999 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The CATTLE EGRET seen by Audrey Evers and Nancy Jackson in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota was still present earlier this week. The bird was seen in town, in the vicinity of Leeds and Kent. From the stoplight off the highway, turn right and go as far as you can. The egret has been seen with a group of RING-BILLED GULLS.

Flocks of RED CROSSBILLS and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are still being seen in Duluth, and the spring migration is progessing slowly.

The only new migrants reported this week were YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, first seen on April 17th, and the LINCOLN'S SPARROW that stopped briefly in my yard on the 21st.

Nevertheless, the numbers of individuals of early spring species has picked up this week, with many sightings of TREE SWALLOW, HERMIT THRUSH, EASTERN PHOEBE, both RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, BROWN CREEPER, and seemingly thousands of DARK-EYED JUNCOS. There are still large numbers of RING-NECKED DUCKS and LESSER SCAUP in the harbor or up the river, along with smaller numbers of other waterfowl; however, most of the TUNDRA SWANS seem to have left.

GREATER YELLOWLEGS have been seen several times, including a flock of five today on the St. Louis River in the Fond du Lac neighborhood.

The hawk count being done by Frank Nicolletti at Enger Tower has been slow again this week, with the big push of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS yet to come.

If you have birds to report, you may leave a message after the tone,

The next scheduled update of this tape will be Thursday, April 29th.
