This is the Minnesota birding report for Wednesday May 10th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

This tape is being updated early to report on several good observations from Duluth in St. Louis County and the Twin Cities area.
A first state record WHITE-TAILED KITE was found today by Bob Janssen in Washington County. The bird was in a field in the extreme northern portion of Afton State Park near the town of Afton. The location where it has been seen most frequently was on the south side of 50th Street about a half a mile east of St. Croix Trail.
Also today was the most unusual finding of a first sate record WHITE-THROATED SWIFT, which was picked up injured in downtown Minneapolis today. It was taken to the Wildlife Rehab Clinic on the St. Paul Campus of the University. Its current condition is unknown.
An adult male MCCOWN'S LONGSPUR was found May 8th by Dave Benson at 40th Ave West. It was seen along the road at the eastern corner of the water impoundment. To reach this location, take the 40th Ave W exit off I-35, cross over to the bay side of the freeway, follow the gravel road just beyond the frontage road which leads to the impoundment, and go left and drive or hike out to the far eastern corner of the area.
A PIPING PLOVER was seen at Hearding Island in Duluth on May 7th. What was apparently a second Piping Plover was seen on May 9th in Duluth at the 40th Ave. West area.
Also at the 40th Avenue West area were four SNOWY EGRETS feeding and flying around various spots of the impoundment on the 9th. On the 7th a SNOWY EGRET was seen in LaCrescent, Houston County about 200 yards north of Main Street where the former dump used to be.
On the morning of May 6th Colin Gjervold found a CATTLE EGRET in southern Dakota County. The bird was one half mile west of Dresden Ave. along 315th St West. Also on May 6th and also in Dakota County Drew Smith found a Catte Egret on the west side of state highway 3 between 275th and 280th Street.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was in Robert Jessen's backyard in southwest Austin, Mower County, on May 7th. On May 5th a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was found by Dave Zumeta near the headquarters building at Thompson Park in Dakota County. The park is about a quarter of a mile east of U.S. highway 52 on Butler Avenue.
A first Kandiyohi County record PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was seen by Randy Frederickson in the town of Willmar on May 7th. And on the 8th Rick Flynn reported a Prothonotary Warbler in Mahtomedi, Washington County.
Other observations called in during the past short week include PHILADELPHIA VIREO, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, CERULEAN WARBLER at Murphy Hanrehan Park in Scott County, CAPE MAY WARBLER. and HARRIS'S SPARROW.
