This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday December 4th.
Per Johanssen and Joachim Strengbom found a PACIFIC LOON on November 29th at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors, Lake County. The bird was still present the next day. They also reported a first-year THAYER'S GULL at nearby Agate Bay.
The following birds were reported by Karl Bardon on December 2nd along the Mississippi River from Reno to Lake City. At Pool 8 of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge were 6800 TUNDRA SWANS and a record high 7400 COMMON GOLDENEYE. There was a LONG-TAILED DUCK and two BLACK SCOTERS at Pool 8. Long-tailed Ducks were also found at Lock and Dam #7 in Winona County, and on Lake Pepin at Lake City, Wabasha County. Also at Lock and Dam #7 was a first-winter THAYER'S GULL. There are also 43,000 COMMON MERGANSERS on Lake Pepin, plus both GLAUCOUS GULLS and Thayer's Gulls.
On the 29th, a second-winter Glaucous Gull was sitting on the ice at Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis. As many as four Glaucous Gulls were on the east side of causeway just south of the Black Dog power plant in Dakota County on November 30th.
On November 27th, a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK was at Hyland Lake Park Reserve, in Bloomington, Hennepin County. It was seen in the small field on the south side of the main park entrance along East Bush Lake Road.
Warren Nelson reports that on November 28th, he found two GREAT GRAY OWLS on Aitkin County Road 18 near its junction with Pietz's Road. And the following day, a single Great Gray Owl was about 200 yards south of Pietz's Road on the snowmobile trail.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on December 3rd on 70th Avenue Southwest between 20th Street and Salem Road in Rochester, Olmsted County. This is same general area where at least one Short-eared over-wintered last year.
On November 28th and 29th, a HOARY REDPOLL was east of Two Harbors in Lake County near Betty's Pies. On December 2nd, at least two Hoary Redpolls were seen in with a flock of COMMON REDPOLLS at the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Aitkin County.
