This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 13, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. Here in the northwest we seem to have settled into more typical winter weather, though without all the drama of snowstorms that have happened in the southern part of the state. Birds here are busy at the feeders, and people seem to be busy with Christmas preparations. In Lake of the Woods County, Beth Siverhus saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL along MN 72 about 5 miles south of Baudette on December 11. Two GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen by Tim Driscoll along the Faunce Road twelve miles south of the Faunce fire tower on December 1. Kris Guggisberg has had a MERLIN hanging around the yard in Roseau, Roseau County since Thanksgiving. Beth Siverhus reported that there are many BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Warroad. Greg Knutsen from Agassiz NWR in Marshall County observed a pair of BALD EAGLES on the west side of the refuge on December 7. Cliff Steinhauer saw a pair of COMMON RAVENS east of Warren on December 10, and many SNOW BUNTINGS along the roads. Eight PINE GROSBEAKS have been visiting his yard near the west entrance to Agassiz NWR. He has also seen three RUFFED GROUSE in the area. In Pennington County, Cliff Steinhauer saw COMMON RAVENS near Thief River Falls, and also St Hilaire on December 13. Myron Peterson reported 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at the Bardo Cemetery three miles north and a half mile east of Eldred in Polk County on December 6. Other species seen in the area included CEDAR WAXWINGS and PINE GROSBEAKS. Sandy Aubol reported 26 CEDAR WAXWINGS and three BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in East Grand Forks on December 7. Two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and four PINE GROSBEAKS have also been visiting her yard. Kristy May in Waubun in southern Mahnomen County reported on December 13 that there were many SNOW BUNTINGS along US 59 between Waubun and Mahnomen. CEDAR WAXWINGS, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, and up to 14 PINE GROSBEAKS are regularly being seen in Waubun. Linda Schumann at Rainbow Resort in northern Becker County reported PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS at their feeders on December 7, From Hubbard County on December 7, Erika Sitz reported PINE GROSBEAKS at the home of Greg and Julie Sitz in Park Rapids. Marshall Howe saw a male NORTHERN HARRIER in Nevis on December 10. Jody Doll reported on December 13 that many TRUMPETER SWANS can be seen from CR 78 in the Ottertail River. Also seen in the area were a GREAT HORNED OWL and a pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS.
