This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 1, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. After a series of very interesting reports which came in over the last few weeks in May, birding has returned to a somewhat normal pace and nothing really unexpected has been reported this week. I have no further reports on the PAINTED BUNTING that made a brief appearance at a feeder last week, nor have I heard of any recent sightings of WESTERN TANAGER and the influx that occurred during the last half of May seems to have stalled at about 18 individuals.
Bruce Fall reports that shorebirds can still be found at the traditional location along the Vermillion River on the Goodhue/Dakota county line. Birds found here on May 29 include WILSON'S PHALAROPE, STILT SANDPIPER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
A YELLOW RAIL was found by Peder Svingen in Rosseau County on the 27th. The bird was on the south side of Rosseau County Road 35, 0.3 of a mile west of Highway 72.
I have a second hand report of a possible CALIFORNIA GULL being seen near Starbuck in Pope County. The bird was apparently seen on the 13th of May.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found by Bruce Ellsworth on May 23. The bird was seen in St. Paul near the intersection of Jackson Street and University Avenue, but has not been seen since.
I have a report of a WHITE-EYED VIREO from Nerstrand Woods in Rice County on May 16, but I have no further information on this sighting. Another WHITE-EYED VIREO was found at the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge by Steve Carlson on the 29th. This bird was on the west side of the second wooden walkway, west of the parking main lot.
CERULEAN WARBLERS are being reported from several locations as far north as Murphy-Hanrehan Park in Bloomington. Other locations include Beaver Creek Park in Houston County and Seven Mile Creek Park in Nicollet County. LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH have been reported from Beaver Creek Park, Wolsfeld (?) Woods in Edina and Falls Creek Natural Area in northern Washington County.
ORCHARD ORIOLES have made a strong appearance this spring and birds have been reported as far north as Two Harbors in Lake County on the 27th and in northern McLeod County at Pipingbird (?) Park on May 31. Both these sightings apparently represent first county records.
Also worth mentioning is that on May 27 Peder Svingen birded Rosseau County and compiled an impressive total of 162 species. This is the highest big day total ever recorded in any Minnesota county.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, June 8. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, phone number and a brief, but specific, message.
