This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 29, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Two very good sightings called in this week include, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, seen by Gene Bauer of Northfield and HENSLOW'S SPARROW, seen by Cole Foster of Columbia Heights. The CHAT, first seen on June 25 is at the Canyon River Wilderness Park in Rice county, just south of the town of Dundas. To get to this location, from the junction of state hwy 3 and Rice CR 20, drive 2.7 miles south on CR 20. On the right side of the road will be a small pull-off. Take the trail which leads from here to the river. After approximately 100 yards you will come to some steep wooden steps. At the bottom of these steps there will be a fork in the trail, with one fork being marked closed. Since these two trails meet again soon, please avoid the closed trail as it is likely that this protects a sensitive area. At the next trail closed sign, proceed straight ahead to the small wooden bridge. The CHAT has been seen approximately 150 yards beyond this bridge. Please avoid the temptation to use audio tapes as this bird is apparently on territory and is often seen displaying. With patience, good looks can be obtained without the need to resort to tapes.

A singing HENSLOW'S SPARROW was found at the Blazing Star Prairie on June 25. Blazing Star is in Clay county near the well known Felton Prairie. The bird was located just south of the mid-way point of the prairie and on the east side of CR 110, which runs through the prairie about a mile south of CR 34 and four miles east of the town of Felton.

Elsewhere, a few WHIP-POOR WILLS, four YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS, two BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS and two BELL'S VIREOS were seen and heard on June 24 in Carver county. From Belle Plaine take state hwy 25 north out of town and across the Minnesota river. Turn right onto Carver CR 40 for half a mile to a trail. Look for the gate on the right side of the road. The birds were found along this trail as well as other trails that branch with this one.

BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS are nesting in Itasca SP in Hubbard county, but for obvious reasons, the exact location cannot be given out here.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was reported on Saturday, June 24 by Greg P at the NSP Power Plant on James Road in Hasson township, Hennepin county. James Road is east of Minnesota hwy 101, just off of Hennepin CR 144.

Oscar Johnson also found a WESTERN KINGBIRD on Saturday, this bird was near 87th and Zane Ave in Brooklyn Park.

Interesting is the BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER found recently in Hennepin county. Bonnie Mulligan reports that the bird has been singing in the trees near her house. This is very far south for this species.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, July 6. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, phone number and a brief but specific message
