This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday June 6th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On June 4th, three singing PRAIRIE WARBLERS were located in the East Bethel area of northern Anoka County. These birds are in a location which is part of the Cedar Creek Natural History Area and entry into this area is strictly prohibited. And, since these birds are apparently on territory, the use of tapes is not necessary and cannot be discouraged strongly enough. Locating these Prairie Warblers by sight and sound as they sing from the tops of the oak trees is relatively easy. To get to this location, drive east along County Road 24 from state highway 65 for three quarters of a mile. Turn south onto County Road 26 and drive just over two miles to a dirt road which goes to the north. This is East Bethel Boulevard. Drive north on this road for about 1/3 of a mile to the large grove of trees on the right. Two of the warblers were singing in this grove, and the third warbler was found about another 200 yards up the road in a smaller grove. Again, trespassing beyond the fence is not allowed, and neither is it necessary since the birds can be seen and heard from the roadside.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was found by Wally Swanson on June 1st, a quarter of a mile west of the intersection of county roads 11 and 12 in LeSueur County. The bird was in a pond near a church along the roadside, and parking is permitted during weekdays in the church parking lot.
A few shorebirds were still migrating through the town of Maple Grove on June 4th. Oscar Johnson reports finding PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and SANDERLING.
Oscar also mentions that several ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS can be found at Elm Creek Park in Brooklyn Park, Hennepin County near the northern edge of their range. ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS have also been reported from Mounds View, Coon Rapids and from Fridley.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found near Cross Lake in Pine City on June 2nd.
A record late ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen among 20 other species of warblers found in Koochiching County during a big day conducted on June 1st.
And finally, HENSLOW'S SPARROWS are still being found at O.L. Kipp State Park in Winona County. At least one male was located on territory on June 1st. Interesting is the HENSLOW'S SPARROW reported from Clay County, also on June 1st. Directions are to look about 100 feet north of the stand of trees which is situated at the north end of Blazing Star Prairie. There is a state game refuge sign here which can be used as a landmark. Check the rocks on the east side of the road near here.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday June 13th. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, location, phone number and a specific message.
