This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday August 29th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Ninety-five CATTLE EGRETS were seen by Lane Elwanger in Big Stone County on August 25th. This unusually large flock was 1.5 miles east of the town of Correll along state highway 7.

Dave Sovereign birded Frontenac State Park on the 24th and recorded several BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS plus a few AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS. Also on the 24th, 25 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were near the junction of 200th and Blaine streets in Dakota County. On August 26th, there was a large flock of AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at the east landfill reservoir dam in Rochester, Olmsted County. A single RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was at Thielke Lake on the 25th. Two were at the Clinton sewage ponds in Big Stone County in with an about 200 WILSON'S PHALAROPES on the 26th. Terry Brashear found 3 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Dawson sewage ponds in Lac Qui Parle County, and an AMERICAN AVOCET at Thielke Lake in Big Stone County. Doug Johnson reports a good variety of shorebirds at Twin Valley sewage ponds in Norman county. Species recorded there recently include both YELLOWLEGS, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, plus PECTORAL, SOLITARY, LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.

The YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was seen again after a long absence at Sibley State Park in Kandiyohi County. It was seen by Terry Brashear on August 27th. Warbler migration continues with several reports, mostly from around the Minneapolis St. Paul area. Among the species seen by Jim Williams in Minnetonka were CHESTNUT-SIDED, CONNECTICUT, WILSON'S, BLACK-AND-WHITE, CANADA and BLACKBURNIAN. CANADA WARBLERS were also seen in Plymouth. And at Roberts Sanctuary in Minneapolis, 14 species of warbler were recorded, including GOLDEN-WINGED and MOURNING. Other migrants reported from around the state include TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE, BLACKPOLL, PINE and ORANGE-CROWNED. Bob Janssen birded Lake Maria State Park in Wright County on the 24th and recorded ten species of warbler, including NORTHERN PARULA, CHESTNUT-SIDED, MAGNOLIA, BLACKBURNIAN, BLACK-AND-WHITE and CONNECTICUT. Many species of flycatchers were also noted there, as well as in Stearns County.

Jane Wicklund found two flocks of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on August 18th in Lake County along highway 1 near Greenwood Lake. And John Schladwieler reported a pair of RED CROSSBILLS at a feeder in the town of Marshall, Lyon County on August 11th and 12th.
