Recent waterfowl reports include a SNOW GOOSE seen in the small city park known as Carpenter Park in the town of St. Louis Park on the 12th. A TRUMPETER SWAN was seen near Reno in Houston County on the 3rd. And a variety of ducks have been reported from Black Dog Lake in Dakota County, including BUFFLEHEAD, LESSER SCAUP, REDHEAD, WOOD DUCK and HOODED MERGANSER.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen near the town of Brownsville in Houston County on March 3rd. This belated report ties last week's record early arrival date for Sandhill Crane.
Nancy Overcott found KILLDEER in Fillmore County on the 9th, and in Houston County on the 11th.
On March 10th, SPRUCE GROUSE were seen by Lane Elwanger in the grouse's traditional area along Lake County Road 2, just south of highway 1.
WILD TURKEYS were reported by Joe Beck as far north as Lino Lakes on the 11th.
NORTHERN HARRIERS were in Dakota County on the 9th, and near Forest Lake in Washington County also on the 9th.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was found by Walter Medwid on March 8th just west of Interstate 494 along the Crosstown Blvd. in western Minneapolis. And on the 9th Dan Versaw refound those three GREAT GRAYS mentioned on last week's tape at the Stonehenge area of Washington County. This location is off of Washington County 11 just south of Big Carnelian Lake.
A BOREAL OWL showed up in a Crow Wing County yard on the 7th, but soon disappeared and it has not returned. Another BOREAL OWL was found by Ray Honkompf in the town of Maplewood on the 4th, but it also was not present for more than a day.
On the 7th of March, Betsy Beneke found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL near the town of Holt in Marshall County. The bird was seen on County Road 7 one an a half miles east of state highway 32. Another HAWK OWL was seen along Lake County Road 2 near the Greenwood Lake public access.
Two SNOWY OWLS were found in northwestern Becker County on March 6th. These were five miles west of U.S. highway 59 and just south of Becker county road 16. Mike Arnold found a SNOWY OWL on U.S. highway 52 about ten miles south of the town of Cannon Falls on March 10th.
And Dave Zumeta heard an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL on March 3rd in his yard along 34th street and 48th Ave. in south Minneapolis.
Both CEDAR and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were just south of Palisade in Aitkin County on the 9th.
The first LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE of the year was reported by Ken LaFond from along Aqua Lane in the town of Lino Lakes, Aitkin County on March 9th.
Finally, returning spring migrants recently reported include a PIED- BILLED GREBE seen along the Minnesota River on the 9th; GREAT BLUE HERONS have been reported from Aitkin, Fillmore, Hennepin and Ramsey Counties; RING-BILLED GULLS were at Pig's Eye Lake in Ramsey County on the 11th; EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were in Fillmore County on the 10th and Winona County on the 11th; MEADOWLARKS of unknown variety were reported from Kandiyohi County on the 3rd; RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were in Lino Lakes on the 9th; PEREGRINE FALCONS were reported from Eagan, Minneapolis and near Black Dog Lake; and COMMON GRACKLES and RED- WINGED BLACKBIRDS have been reported from numerous locations across the southeastern part of the state.
