This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday September 11th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The most interesting birding news of the past week comes from northeastern Minnesota where Say's Phoebe, Pacific Loon, Ross's Goose and Parasitic Jaeger have all been reported. The SAY'S PHOEBE was found on September 9th by Ken and Molly Hoffman in Grand Marais, Cook County. Unfortunately, the bird was present only for a short time and could not be relocated the following day. If anyone is interested in looking for the bird, it was last seen on the east side of the harbor near the old coast guard station.
A PACIFIC LOON was seen on September 6th by Bill Litkey, about a mile north of the Lester River in St. Louis County.
In Lake County, Bob Janssen and Jim Williams found five ROSS' GOOSE at the Beaver Bay sewage ponds which are just off of lake county road 4. The geese were in with a flock of Canada Geese on September 11th. This represents a first county record.
And a PARASITIC JAEGER was seen in Duluth on September 7th by Mike Hendrickson. This dark phase individual was seen beyond the recreation area of park point, just past the Sky Harbor airport buildings.
Unusual is the possible ICELAND GULL seen from the public water access to Goose Lake in Chisago County on September 4th. The bird has not been relocated since its initial discovery.
Jeanie Joppru reports the following shorebirds on September 5th from the Thief River Falls sewage lagoons in Pennington County: SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SANDERLING, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, STILT SANDPIPER, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and WILSON'S PHALAROPE.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH sightings continue to come in, and recent additions to the county list now include McLeod, Anoka, and Washington.
Jacob Langeslag had a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER visit his yard in Faribault in Rice County on September 5th.
Finally, on September 6th, Warren Woessner identified a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER at Rice Creek Park in Fridley, Anoka County. The bird was seen at the second bridge along the path that runs west from Old Central Avenue parking area. A Yellow-throated Warbler was seen near here earlier this Spring.
Thanks for Dave Porter, Erika Sitz, Tom Voss, and Terry Brashear.
