This is the Minnesota birding report for Monday May 17th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. This tape is being updated early to report on the several exceptional observations that have been made in just the past few days.

The SWALLOW-TAILED KITE reported on Sunday's unscheduled update of this tape is still being seen in Rice County at Lower Sakatah Lake. To reach this location, go west of the town of Faribault on state highway 60. Turn north on county road 99, and drive about two and a half miles to the bridge. Park here and watch the trees to the northeast.

Almost as interesting, Bill Stjern found a MISSISSIPPI KITE in St. Paul, Ramsey County on the 15th. He watched the bird from Shepard Road near Crosby Park until it disappeared from view, and he was unable to relocated it.

Scott Wolff reported five RED-THROATED LOONS on the 16th in Duluth. The birds were seen from Minnesota Point on Lake Superior side.

A LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen on the 16th at a sod farm along Hennepin County Road 116 south of the town of Fletcher. Jeff Stephenson reported a WHITE-EYED VIREO at Forestville State Park in Fillmore County. The bird was found calling about 50 yards down the trail that heads south out of the picnic area which is located south of the historical buildings.

On May 15th Randy Frederickson reported a KENTUCKY WARBLER at Robbin's Island Park in Kandiyohi County, which is just north of the town of Willmar The bird was located on the north side of this park- follow the gravel trail along the east side of the lake. A more recent Kentucky Warbler sighting was made by Don Wanschura from Wood Lake in Hennepin County. He found on the 17th about 150 yards south of the Bryant Ave. entrance. And David Neitzel found a Kentucky Warbler at Murphy-Hanrehan Park in Scott County on the 16th. This was seen about 100 yards east of trail marker number 10 in the southern part of the park.

Al batt reported a SUMMER TANAGER near Lake Shapou at Myre Big Island State Park in Freeborne County on the 13th, and Don Kienholz has Summer Tanager at his feeder in Duluth. You can call the Duluth birding report for more information at 218-525-5952. And a Summer Tanager was found in Meeker County at the home of Paul Fank on May 16th. This was along 708th Ave. south of the town of Dassel. Judy Peterson reported a Summer Tanager in Bloomington on the 17th. She saw it near 102nd Street south and Nesbitt Ave.

And Peder Svingen had a brief look at a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK on May 14th. He found the bird at Anderson County Park near Spirit Lake in Jackson County.

On May 14th Tom Boevers found a HENSLOW'S SPARROW at the Faribault Wildlife Management Area in Rice County. Up to four Henslow's were seen at this location through May 16th. The Faribault Wildlife Management Area is located south of the town of Faribault, just west of Rice County 19 on 235th Ave.
