This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday September 30th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On September 27th, a census of shorebirds was taken at South Heron Lake in Jackson County by Kim Eckert, Anthony Hertzel, Rick Hoyme, Craig Mandel, and Peder Svingen. The lake is very low with vast areas of exposed mudflats and a large concentration of gulls, pelicans, cormorants, and waterfowl. Among the fourteen species of shorebirds seen were two AMERICAN AVOCETS, 500 STILT SANDPIPERS, and a single WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

Interesting is the report of a BALTIMORE ORIOLE at Julie Brophy's home in Victoria, Carver County on September 29th. The bird has been there since the 24th.

Most unusual is the reported KENTUCKY WARBLER, apparently seen in a Carver County backyard on September 29th. This would be only the second fall record for this species in Minnesota, and the latest by more than six weeks.

Dave Soverign reported a GOLDEN EAGLE in Beltrami County east of Rabideau Lake on September 26th.

Other migrants now showing up across the state include ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, DARK-EYED JUNCO, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.

In cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Tourism, highlights of this hotline can be now heard at a toll free number which is available to callers outside the Twin Cities area. The number is 1-800-657-3700.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday October 7th.
