BIRDING REPORT:
A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen by Doug Johnson on January 31st along Hwy. 72 about 7 miles north of the town of Kelliher in Beltrami County. The same day, Doug also found a BOREAL CHICKADEE and a few SHARP-TAILED GROUSE at the Red Lake Peatland Scientific and Natural Area, Beltrami Co., located about 10 miles north of the town of Waskish on Hwy. 72.
A SNOWY OWL was reported by Dan & Sandy Thimgan near the Skibvedt Cemetary about 3 miles north of Battle Lake, Otter Tail Co., on Hwy. 78. It was last reported on February 2nd.
Another SNOWY OWL was seen by Beth Siverhus on January 29th along Hwy. 11 just east of the town of Donaldson in Kittson Co.
The VARIED THRUSH is still present at the Foss home in the town of Skime in Roseau Co.
A BALD EAGLE and several GRAY JAYS are being seen at the Lake Bronson State Park in Kittson Co., reported by Gladwin Lynne.
A CAROLINA WREN is still present at the home of Eddy Edwards in Battle Lake, Otter Tail Co. as of February 3rd.
The CURVE-BILLED THRASHER is still at a home near Breckenridge. For information on how to see this bird, please call Anthony Hertzel at 612-780-7149.
A MERLIN was observed by Tim & Mary Kessler in the 1200 block of Lake Ave. in Detroit Lakes on January 29th.
At the Rydell National Wildlife Refuge in Polk Co. staff reports up to six GRAY JAYS coming to feeders at the visitor center, along with over-wintering RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and a partial albino COMMON GRACKLE. Flocks of AMERICAN ROBINS and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are feasting on crab apples there also. If you plan to visit, plesae call the refuge at 218-687-2229 for visitor center hours.
The HOARY REDPOLL coming to the feeder at the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge headquarters was still present as of January 31st.
A flock of up to 150 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen by Jeannie Joppru in her yard in Thief River Falls on January 31st.
Flocks of ROBINS, BOHEMIAN & CEDAR WAXWINGS are being seen in and around Detroit Lakes, Becker Co.
RED CROSSBILLS have been seen in the Beltrami Island State Forest. A good area to check is in the red pines near the Faunce fire tower which is about 10 miles east of Norris Camp along the Faunce-Butterfield Road.
A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK is still seen regularly by Roland Jordahl in his yard at Pelican Rapids, Otter Tail Co.
Many NORTHERN SHRIKES are being observed in our area this winter, including a bird recently observed to be snacking on rodents just west of Warroad, reported by Bob Wennerstrand.
On the Otter Tail River near Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Co., Steve Millard reports the following birds: 175-200 TRUMPETER SWANS, 275 COMMON GOLDENEYES, HOODED MERGANSERS, WOOD DUCKS, male RING-NECKED DUCKS, BALD EAGLES and a BELTED KINGFISHER. Another interesting bird in the area is an EASTERN TOWHEE.
Winter is a good time to look for GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS and up to 150 have been seen recently at or near the Rothsay Prairie Wildlife Management Area, Wilkin Co., along with several MEADOWLARKS. On January 30th, a SHORT-EARED OWL was observed by Artis and Gordon Martinson along Co. Rd. 176 in this same area.
At the Manston Wildlife Management Area in Wilkin Co., Steve Millard reports finding NORTHERN FLICKER, MOURNING DOVE, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER.
