BIRDING REPORT:

Spring migration is on, with a number of new arrivals reported this week.

The first RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was reported by Eddy Edwards from Battle Lake in Otter Tail Co. on April 29th. The CAROLINA WREN was present there over the weekend also.

From Otter Tail Co. on April 30th, Steve Millard reported WILSON'S PHALAROPE, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, WILLET, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, HARRIS'S SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.

Teresa Jaskiewicz hosted a SPOTTED TOWHEE on Sunday, April 30th at her home in Otter Tail Co.

RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were reported by Bill and Mary Wyatt near Detroit Lakes on the 2nd. They also have WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS.

Birds reported at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge on the 3rd include these warblers: PINE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER and OVENBIRD. Also seen on the 3rd were BLUE-HEADED VIREO, LEAST FLYCATCHER, SWAINSON'S THRUSH and EVENING GROSBEAK. FORSTER'S TERNS returned earlier in the week.

At The Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge on the 1st, a PEREGRINE FALCON was found in the area of the Bisson Lake basin. Other new birds seen that day were SANDHILL CRANE, BANK SWALLOWS and BARN SWALLOWS.

From the Felton Prairie on April 25th, Connie Norheim noted both LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE and CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR had returned.

Jeannie Joppru reported EVENING GROSBEAKS at her feeder near Thief River Falls on April 29th.

And from on or near the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, Gary Tischer reports: COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBES, WESTERN GREBES, RED-NECKED GREBES, PIED-BILLED GREBES, RUDDY DUCK, SORA, GREAT GRAY OWL, PEREGRINE FALCON, NORTHERN SHRIKE, FRANKLIN'S GULL, VEERY, PALM WARBLER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.

Agassiz Refuge staff have also asked me to mention that Agassiz Pool is on its way to a complete drawdown, so there is great shorebird habitat available and hundreds of birds have been pouring into the area over the past week.
