Record warm temperatures have been the norm this week, with days in the 70's to near 80. A variety of migrants continue to move into or through the area.
Two GREAT GRAY OWLS are being seen along Golf Course Drive between Jake's Resort and the Northwest Angle Resort on the west side of Lake of the Woods.
On the 14th, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen by Gretchen Mehmel at Bemis Hill in the Beltrami Island State Forest, Roseau County.
At the Zippel Bay State Park on Lake of the Woods, Richard and Juanita Peterson from Wewela, SD reported a SNOWY OWL at the swimming beach on the 15th. They also found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL that day along County Road 1, south of the town of Baudette. These sites are both in Lake of the Woods County.
>From Lake Bronson State Park, staff observations this week included: SNOW GOOSE, CANADA GOOSE, TUNDRA SWAN, MALLARD, LESSER SCAUP, AMERICAN WIGEON, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL & MERLIN.
Connie Norheim, Mark Otnes and Keith Corliss were birding in Norman County on the 15th and found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE. Some other species of note included GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, TUNDRA SWAN, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SANDHILL CRANE, HERMIT THRUSH, PALM WARBLER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW and RUSTY BLACKBIRD. Clay County highlights that day were NORTHERN SHRIKE and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER.
On the 15th, Shelley Steva and Jeanie Joppru birded Polk County near the Pembina Trail Preserve and Marcoux corner and found SANDHILL CRANE, PALM WARBLER, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, HORNED LARK, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, (presumed) WESTERN MEADOWLARK, and NORTHERN FLICKER.
On the16th, Andrea Stebleton and her ornithology class found 50-60 SANDHILL CRANES and about 20 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS near a dairy farm east of the town of Borup in Norman County.
Shelley Steva reported a NORTHERN SHRIKE at the Pembina Trail Preserve in Polk County on the 17th.
Teresa Jaskiewicz has been hosting a SPOTTED TOWHEE this week, at her home north of Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.
>From the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker County, staff reported a PEREGRINE FALCON flying over North and South Tamarac Lakes on the 18th. Also in the area were SONG SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
