This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, April 20th, sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Lakes Area Birding Club. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Migration continues, but at a slow pace. Large lakes are still completely ice covered. Smaller lakes and marshes are beginning to open up as we finally had some days in the 50's this week along with a little bit of sunshine!

Twenty two species of waterfowl were reported this week from the northwest, with canvasback, redhead, gadwall, blue and green-winged teal making an appearance. A Ross's goose was seen in Wilkin County on the 16th and tundra swans were in several counties. No reports of red-breasted mergansers have been received.

COMMON LOONS were observed in Otter Tail and Becker counties, with two birds showing up at the Hamden Slough NWR on the 19th. RED-NECKED GREBES were reported in Otter Tail, Becker and Marshall Counties. TURKEY VULTURES are continuing to move northward, along with FRANKLIN'S GULLS.

AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS have been reported from several northwest counties, as have GREAT EGRET, MARBLED GODWIT, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, COMMON SNIPE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK and AMERICAN COOT. BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were reported in Otter Tail County at the Lake Alice rookery in downtown Fergus Falls, along with DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS. UPLAND SANDPIPER was reported from Polk County on the 20th.

GOLDEN EAGLES were reported from Wilkin Co. on the 14th and Agassiz NWR in Marshall Co. on the 9th and 10th. A PEREGRINE FALCON was reported in Kittson Co. near Lancaster this week. And a MERLIN was reported from Thief River Falls, Pennington Co. OSPREYS were seen in Otter Tail, Becker and Beltrami Counties.

A SWAINSON'S HAWK was near the Becker/Clay Co. line along Becker CR 102 on the 15th. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was in Red Lake Co. on the 14th. SHORT-EARED OWLS were in Wilkin Co. just west of Lawndale on the 14th. And a late SNOWY OWL was seen in Polk County on the 15th.

GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were reported in Wilkin and Polk Counties.

A "red-shafted" NORTHERN FLICKER was found in Alm Park in Moorhead, Clay Co. on the 18th. The "yellow-shafted" NORTHERN FLICKER, which is common, is moving through the northwest also, along with YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS.

SANDHILL CRANES have been reported again from all northwestern counties, with a flock of 200 birds observed on the 12th along Pennington CR 3, five miles west of St. Hilaire.

>From the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, two PURPLE MARTINS were seen on the 14th, a PINE WARBLER was seen on the 19th and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS arrived on the 20th.

Other birds reported this week include MOURNING DOVE, EASTERN PHOEBE, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, TREE SWALLOW, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, HERMIT THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, WESTERN MEADOWLARK and increasing numbers of PURPLE FINCH. Lastly, Stan Wood, Manager of the Roseau River WMA suggests that folks birding in the Roseau area may wish to check out Roseau Lake WMA, which is approximately 5 miles northwest of the city of Roseau. Several thousand acres are flooded, providing an abundance of shallow water habitat which should be good for shorebirds as the weather warms.
