This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, July 9, 2004
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may

Things have really quieted down after the exciting migration. It seems
as if the birds, as well as the people, are spending all their energy
dealing with the cold wet weather we have been having. Baby birds of
many species are making their appearance.
In Clay County, the ROCK WRENS have apparently successfully nested, and
are feeding young. On July 2nd,Craig Menze saw one downy young and
witnessed the parents returning time after time to a nest site with
food, apparently feeding other babies.
Alex Wendorf reported from Rydell National Wildlife Refuge for the week
of July 4th. Among the species he mentioned were TRUMPETER SWAN, COMMON
LOON, and TURKEY VULTURE.
Here in Pennington County, we have a family of DOWNY WOODPECKERS now
visiting the suet feeder, and there are regular visits by a pair of
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER.
Roseau County sightings from the Roseau River WMA for the week of June
28th included a TRUMPETER SWAN on Pool 1 west which is three miles west
of CR 3. This week, a WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen on Pool 1 East about
1/4 mile west of CR 3. An AMERICAN BITTERN was spotted at the second
spillway on Pool 2.
Thanks to Craig Menze, Melanie Torkelson, and Alex Wendorf for their
reports.
