The cold has arrived but with little snow, and lots of ice. Still interesting birds are being seen. Plans are being made for all the CBC's in the area. All are encouraged to participate in one or another of them, and feeder watchers are especially needed to report all species and numbers seen on count day and during count week.

>From Lake of the Woods County, Tom Hanson was excited to find a female NORTHERN CARDINAL in his yard in Baudette on December 12th. Other species present there included three MOURNING DOVES, 4 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 2 WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, COMMON REDPOLLS, and PINE SISKINS. Gretchen Mehmel reported three GREAT GRAY OWLS- one northwest and one southwest of Pitt, and one southwest of Norris Camp. She also saw NORTHERN SHRIKE, GRAY JAY, PINE GROSBEAK, and PINE SISKINS in the county.

Mary Broten found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the north side of MN highway 11, 1/4 mile east of milepost 54 in Roseau County. Susan Anderson had a BROWN THRASHER come to her feeder south of Greenbush along US highway 32 on December 12th.

Herb Dingmann and Ron Erpelding did an owl survey in Beltrami County on December 11th, and while they did not find any owls, they did find some interesting species. Among them were several hundred BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Blackduck. Also in the county were PINE GROSBEAKS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, PINE SISKINS, and EVENING GROSBEAKS.

Linda Johnson was out on December 11th when it was very windy and she remarked on the hundreds of COMMON REDPOLLS along CR 3 near Warren in Marshall County.

In Pennington County, Loren Race had a VARIED THRUSH coming to his feeder station in Rural Goodridge on December 13-14th. A pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS visited our feeders near Thief River Falls on Thursday, December 16th.

Teresa Aamodt saw an AMERICAN ROBIN on Becker CR 6 north of Big Cormorant Lake on December 16th.

Jeffrey Wiersma reported that Glendalough State Park has two new feeder stations that are attracting lots of birds. Among them are DOWNY WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE. Also near the park entrance, a BALD EAGLE and a BARRED OWL have been seen.
