It is starting to look like fall and the shorter days remind us that summer is about over. Reports are starting to come in indicating that the birds know it too.
First - a correction. The report of a Bewick's Wren in Bemidji last week has been corrected . The wren was a CAROLINA WREN at the home of Pat and Cal Rice in Beltrami County. This is a first county record. Birders are welcome to come to see the bird which has been seen primarily in the mid-afternoon and early evening around the birdbath pond in their backyard. It was seen on the 22, 26, 27 and 28 of August. You can call Pat at 218-751-0137 for directions and information.
Mike Murphy at Hamden NWR in Becker County reported a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON at Bisson Lake north of CR 14 on August 30. On August 27, Sherri Norland observed 14 species of shorebirds on Homstad Lake including one RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. On the 28th, Greg Hoch found two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, two HUDSONIAN GODWITS, and hundreds of peeps at Eagle Pond and Hesby Wetland at the refuge. A SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen on the south end of Homstad Lake.
Doug Johnson had a special sighting at Riverside Cemetery in north Moorhead, Clay County, on August 29 when he observed a calling LONG-EARED OWL there.
>From Beltrami County, Pat Rice reported YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, OVENBIRD, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in her yard near Bemidji on August 29. On the previous day, I saw five species of woodpeckers there, as well as GRAY CATBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, SONG SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. On the 30th, she had NASHVILLE WARBLER, and SCARLET TANAGER.
Melissa Galland reported a BALD EAGLE feeding on roadkill in eastern Polk County near Trail on August 31. Shelley Steva saw a SWAINSON'S HAWK one mile west of the Grand Marais River crossing near East Grand Forks on August 27.
In Red Lake County, Shelley saw a COMMON RAVEN along CR 1 four miles east of Plummer on August 25. On September 1, she observed an immature TURKEY VULTURE one mile east of the intersection of CR 5 and CR 1 near Oklee.
Also on the 25th, she saw ten GREAT EGRETS along US 59 two miles south of its intersection with CR 3 in Pennington County. On the 31st, she reported a HERMIT THRUSH, and a PINE WARBLER in the county. A COMMON RAVEN was seen along US 59 in southern Pennington County on September 1st.
Jeff Birchem reported a SHORT-EARED OWL at Cecil's Landing on the Roosevelt Forest Road in Lake of the Woods County on August 25.
