Mild weather this week has alleviated some of the icy roads, but county and other less traveled roads remain very slippery, particularly if you are on foot! Late this week light snow is covering up the ice, which is both helpful and also serves to hide the icy patches. Great care if needed in both driving and walking. The good news is that so far, high winds have not drifted the snow, so few roads are closed due to winter conditions.
Most birders this week are reporting on CBC's that are ongoing throughout the area, and many counts are showing record or near record numbers of species.
The Baudette CBC was held on December 28 with very good numbers of birds seen. Among those was a GREAT GRAY OWL, seen along the Stoney Corners Road, 3 miles from Lake of the Woods CR 1. In addition the count reported SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 5 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and SNOW BUNTINGS in the count circle.
The Beltrami Island CBC in the Beltrami Island State Forest was held on December 29, and a record or near-record 25 species was recorded. Included in those were a SPRUCE GROUSE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK along the Bankton trail, one GREAT GRAY OWL along the Faunce Forest Road, a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER about two miles south of the Stoney Corners FR along the Faunce FR, several BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, NORTHERN SHRIKE, GRAY JAYS, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, COMMON RAVENS, PINE GROSBEAKS, RED CROSSBILLS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and PINE SISKINS. It was a very good day.
Tim Driscoll was birding in Roseau County on December 27. He reported a GREAT GRAY OWL, no less than 6-10 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS along and around MN 310 north of Roseau that day. He also saw ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, COMMON RAVEN, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, two NORTHERN SHRIKES, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, and 9 PINE GROSBEAKS.
Lisa Newton reported a SNOWY OWL in section 6 of Hamre Township of Beltrami County on December 24.
In Marshall County, she saw a SNOWY OWL along MN 219 in section 16 of Moylan Township on Christmas Day. On December 27, she observed an AMERICAN ROBIN feeding on crabapples in the town of Grygla. I was in Marshall County on December 24 where I saw RING-NECKED PHEASANT, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, three NORTHERN SHRIKES, and COMMON RAVENS.
The Rothsay CBC, which was held on December 22, counted 28 species including 60 GRAY PARTRIDGE, many GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, two GREAT BLUE HERONS, and 36 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
>From Otter Tail County, Teresa Jaskiewicz reported a GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN in her yard on December 18, also BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, and DARK-EYED JUNCOS .
