It doesn't seem possible that January is almost over, and we have only a dusting of snow except in the woods of the northwest. Bird variety is somewhat different from the usual with some flickers, robins, and juncos being reported all winter.

Tom and Sheryl Smith reported 24 SHORT-EARED OWLS in Wilkin County on January 22. A female NORTHERN HARRIER was also seen along CR 15. On January 25, Connie Norheim and Becky Oberlander found a pair of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at the Rothsay WMA, and another along CR 52. Also along CR 52 were about 100 SNOW BUNTINGS.

Mary Broten reported 5 swans flying over US 10 south of Perham in Otter Tail County on January 22. These were likely TRUMPETER SWANS.

Connie Norheim and Becky Oberlander spotted a NORTHERN SHRIKE at Felton Prairie in Clay County on January 25.

An adult SNOWY OWL was seen by Shannon Linder about 2 miles west of Gentilly in Polk County on January 20.

Diana Morkassel in Marshall County east of Warren reported three GRAY JAYS coming to their yard on January 23. Other species being seen include NORTHERN FLICKER, DARK-EYED JUNCO, PINE GROSBEAK, and COMMON REDPOLL.

From Beltrami County, Mary Lou Marchand reported a COOPER'S HAWK in her yard in Bemidji on January 19. She also saw RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, 30 PURPLE FINCHES, and two PINE SISKINS.

Beth Siverhus was in Itasca County at Dixon Lake last weekend where she saw a BARRED OWL, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, COMMON RAVENS, 5 PINE GROSBEAKS, 14 EVENING GROSBEAKS, and 50 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES among others.

In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski saw a SNOWY OWL near Orleans on January 18. He also reported three to five GRAY JAYS coming regularly to his cabin northwest of Lancaster. Other species included BALD EAGLE, and SHORT-EARED OWL.
