This has been a very cold week in the northwestern part of Minnesota. Bright sun has mitigated the cold somewhat, but generally the temperatures have been keeping folks close to home. Birds , however, seem to know that spring cannot be far away, and the spring songs of chickadees and the drumming of woodpeckers can be heard if one takes the time to listen.

Beth Siverhus reported a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in Lake of the Woods County two miles west of Williams along MN 11 on February 9 and again on February 12. Another was seen 4 miles west of Baudette on MN 11 on February 11. At Norris Camp, Gretchen Mehmel saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE near the camp on February 9; a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen a mile north of Norris Camp. Other species mentioned in her report included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GRAY JAYS, and PINE GROSBEAKS.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported RUFFED GROUSE, 4 GRAY JAYS, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 50 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 1 HOARY REDPOLL at his place northwest of Lancaster.

In Beltrami County on February 9, Beth Siverhus found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL at mile marker 49 along MN 72 north of Waskish, and a GREAT GRAY OWL at mile marker 44. On February 11 a pair of BALD EAGLES were seen at their nest tree south of Waskish. On February 11, there were 9 TRUMPETER SWANS in some open water on the Mississippi River northeast of Bemidji.

At the Third River on Dixon Lake in Itasca County, Beth Siverhus saw a pair of MALLARDS in some open water on February 10, and a BALD EAGLE was seen nearby.

In Pennington County, Grace Mayta reported 15 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the town of Thief River Falls on February 9.

Steve Dahl reported seeing two GRAY JAYS at his place on CR 1 east of Plummer in Red Lake County on February 10.

John Dermody observed two AMERICAN ROBINS feasting on crabapples in Frazee, Becker County, on February 13.

Rick Gjervold was in Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County on February 9 where he saw a female WOOD DUCK, and relocated the COMMON LOON and an AMERICAN COOT. A BALD EAGLE was spotted in a tree above the Eagles Club parking lot. John Dermody reported some WILD TURKEYS seen between Frazee and Vergas on February 11.

In Wilkin County, Rick Gjervold got a good look at a SHORT-EARED OWL at the Fred Hintz WMA southwest of Rothsay. SNOW BUNTINGS were seen frequently in the open areas.

Susan Wiste reported SNOW BUNTINGS in Douglas County near Alexandria on February 10.
