This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, Sept 13, sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Several birds of interest have been seen in Duluth and vicinity since last
weekend, and these include BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, WILLET, BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER, PARASITIC JAEGER, and good numbers of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS at Hawk
Ridge.

On the afternoon of Sept 11, 3 jaegers flew by the Sky Harbor Airport at
Park Point and disappeared to the north; one of these was identified as a
Parasitic, and the other 2 were most likely Parasitics as well.  So far
this is the first jaeger sighting in Duluth this season.  On the same day
some Willets were also spotted at the Park Point Recreation Area.

Last weekend a Black-crowned Night-Heron and 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers
were at the 40th Ave West Erie Pier area, and in all at least 10 species of
shorebirds were seen, including AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER. For those unfamiliar with this area, take the 40th Ave West
exit off I-35, cross over to the bay side of the freeway, park by the gate
just beyond the frontage road, and hike the gravel road which leads to the
water impoundment; most of the shorebirds are being seen on the far side of
the main pool.

At Hawk Ridge the first significant movement of raptors took place
yesterday and today, with over 4,000 Broad-winged Hawks counted yesterday
and over 3,000 today.  Also seen from the Main Overlook recently were:  a
TRUMPETER SWAN and over 1,000 CANADA GEESE on Sept 8; a SWAINSON'S HAWK and
40 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 10th; 2 Swainson's, 2 SANDHILL CRANES and 8
early SNOW GEESE yesterday; and 9 more pelicans today.

If this raptor flight continues a few more days, it will be a successful
Hawk Weekend event which starts tomorrow, Sept 14, with registration,
refreshments and a program starting at 7 PM at UMD's Chemistry Auditorium,
room 200.  On both Saturday and Sunday, besides all the activities at Hawk
Ridge itself, there will be 3 birding field trips meeting at 7 AM both
days:  the 40th Ave West field trips meet at the access road gate
(directions were previously given); the Park Point trips meet at the main
parking lot in the Recreration Area; and the North Shore trips meet at the
Lester Park parking area on Lester River Rd just north of Superior St.  And
Saturday evening's dinner (advance reservations needed) and program begin
at 6 PM at UMD's Kirby Student Center Ballroom.

update will probably be on Sunday, Sept 16, since something of note will
probably be found with so many birders in town.  The phone number for the
