This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 27th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On the 24th, Kim Eckert identified a HOARY REDPOLL in his yard on the North Shore.
On the 23rd, one WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL and an anatum PEREGRINE FALCON were in the vicinity of 4th St and 16th Ave E.
On the 21st, Tim Dawson reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Jean Duluth Road at the entrance to the St. Louis County Highway Dept. This is two miles north of West Tischer.
Also, on the 21st, a female HARLEQUIN DUCK was reported from the Grand Marais Harbor, that BALTIMORE ORIOLE in West Duluth was still coming to the feeder, and Tom Young reported COMMON REDPOLLS and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER from Chub Lake in Carlton County.
Peder Svingen followed up on the many waterfowl that were seen during the Duluth Christmas Bird Count. As of the 25th, these species were still present: CANADA GOOSE (several dozen), AMERICAN BLACK DUCK (several dozen), MALLARD (still over 1000 birds), RING-NECKED DUCK (1), GREATER SCAUP (2), LESSER SCAUP (1), COMMON GOLDENEYE (about 200), and COMMON MERGANSER (10+). The last sighting of LONG-TAILED DUCK was on the 23rd. No scoters or harlequins since the CBC.
