This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 5th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The surprising influx of GREAT EGRETS into Northeastern Minnesota continued this week. Single individuals of this species show up every few years. This week, however, there were three Great Egrets at 40th Ave West, two at the pond at Flood Bay, one in Melrude, one in Aitkin County, and one on the Lester River Road.
Dave Grosshuesch has been banding passerines at Hawk Ridge for over a month now, and he reported a large movement of warblers over the past week. He banded ten CONNECTICUT WARBLERS over the past four days, and earlier this week he banded two BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, a BLACKPOLL WARBLER, a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, and his first ever SEDGE WREN.
Jim Barrett reported six species of shorebirds from 40th Ave West, including a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. Jim Lind reported two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS from the Two Harbors airport, plus another on the waterfront. Today Jim spotted two AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at Two Harbors. That CAROLINA WREN is still being seen at 624 Laurel in Cloquet.
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue to be abundant, and the variablity of their plumages may cause some confusion. Singing groups of White-winged Crossbills were heard every day this week on the Independence Road, two miles east of the wayside at the Jct of Hwy 53 and Hwy 33.
