This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, July 1, 2004, sponsored
by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Deborah Buria-Falkowski reported a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD near downtown
Virginia, MN on June 27th in a small field area around Range Monument
and the bike trail.
On the 26th, Kent Nickell found a female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the
Sax-Zim area on Owl Ave, a half mile south of the jct. with Cty Rd 52
(Arkola).
On the 25th, Shawn Conrad and Earl Orf found a PEREGRINE FALCON on the
water tower in Bovey. They also reported WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and
CONNECTICUT WARBLERS in Aitkin Cty on the trail that continues south
from the jct. of Cty Rd 18 and Pietz's Rd. north of Palisade.
On the 24th, Steven Buria-Falkowski saw two small flocks of RED
CROSSBILLS on the Big Aspen Ski Trails north of Virginia.
Audrey Evers has found at least three GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER territories
in the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes area, at the northern edge of this species'
range in Northeastern Minnesota. Two of these sightings were on Hwy 110
Southeast of Hoyt Lakes about a quarter mile past the St. Louis River.
Terry Frank saw a GREAT GRAY OWL again on Lake Cty Rd 3, a half mile
south of London Crossing. Karen Sussman has a WHIP-POOR-WILL calling
near her home in Britt.
