This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, March 3, 2005, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
At least two BOREAL OWLS have been seen in the last week along the Hwy 61 Expressway between Duluth and Two Harbors in the stretch between and around the Berquist Rd and the Homestead Rd.
GREAT GRAY OWLS are still abundant, and NORTHERN HAWK OWLS are still around in Aitkin Cty. Warren Nelson saw good numbers along Cty Rd 1 this week.
Both BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and THREE-TOED WOODPECKER were seen at the location off the west side of McDavitt, 2.6 miles north of the Sax Rd in Sax-Zim this week.
Carol Tveekrem reported that a possible LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen by Don Goodell of Lutsen on the 23rd. A loggerhead at this time of the year would be quite unexpected.
Bill Tefft reported at least two flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Ely on the 25th. Waxwings were also reported from the town of Sandstone and from eastern Duluth.
