This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 29th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An adult GYRFALCON was reported by Peder Svingen this afternoon on the harbor ice out from the Park Point recreational area. Peder also found five GLAUCOUS GULLS at Canal Park on the 25th and relocated the female RING-NECKED DUCK in the harbor on the 25th, and two male HOODED MERGANSERS and four GREATER SCAUP on the 26th.
Two male HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen in Grand Marais on the 24th. One was off Artist Point and the other was in the slip behind the North House Folk School. As many as 13 HORNED GREBES are still being seen as of the 27th on Lake Superior, out from the mouth of the Stewart River. A RED-NECKED GREBE was also seen on the 27th at Flood Bay.
Two SPRUCE GROUSE were seen on the 24th along Minnesota Highway 1, 3 miles south of the Spruce Road, and another was seen 1.2 miles south of the Spruce Road.
Dave Grosshuesch found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 28th at the junction of Lake County Road 2 and Forest Highway 11 (CR 15), and a GREAT GRAY OWL on the Stoney River Forest Road, 2.9 miles north of Forest Highway 11. Tim and Nancy Grimes relocated a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 27th at the junction of the Stone Lake Road (CR 319) and CR 7 in the Sax-Zim bog.
Greg Seegert found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 25th on the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.9 miles north of Sax Road (CR 28), and a BOREAL CHICKADEE along the Admiral Road (CR 788) just south of the gravel pit on the northern portion of the road. Greg also relocated the SNOWY OWL in Aitkin County on CR 16 (Kestrel Avenue) just south of Tamarack.
John Ellis reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Aitkin County on the 27th along Minnesota Highway 200 at mile marker 184, west of the Rabey Management Area. John also reported a BOREAL CHICKADEE on the 26th in the Sax-Zim bog along Owl Avenue, just north of the bend.
Karen Sussman found a SNOWY OWL on the 26th along US Highway 53 approximately halfway between mile markers 46 and 47, about 7-8 miles north of Cotton. EVENING GROSBEAKS were found by Linda Sparling on the 28th along the Blue Spruce Road, 1.1 mile north of CR 133.
