This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 15th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The three GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES at the Fond du Lac Resource Management Division office just west of Cloquet were reported as recently as the 14th.
Jeanne Tanamachi found a male HARLEQUIN DUCK and a LONG-TAILED DUCK in Grand Marais on the 10th, out from the Shoreline Motel on the east side of town. She found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 9th along the Croftville Road (CR 87), near Anderson's Resort. Bill Lane heard a singing NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL on the 8th near Oberg Mountain.
Mike Hendrickson relocated the SNOWY OWL in the Duluth Port Terminal along Garfield Avenue on the 13th and the NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 14th along the Rice Lake Road (CR 4) about a quarter mile north of the Martin Road (CR 9). Mike also relocated the WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at Canal Park on the 13th, and Jan Green found the LONG-TAILED DUCK there today among 400 COMMON GOLDEYES. Mike found THAYER'S GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and an ICELAND GULL at the Superior landfill on the 13th. Dave Carman reported two PEREGRINE FALCONS in the Duluth harbor earlier this week. I have not heard any recent reports of the Gyrfalcon in the harbor. Frank and Kathi Berdan found two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS on the 14th near 42nd Street on Park Point, but could not relocate the Townsend’s Solitaire.
Kurt Klussendorf found a displaying male SPRUCE GROUSE along with a female on the 14th along Lake County Road 2, 1.5 miles north of the Sand River. Kurt also found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors. Mark and Bev Junghans found three SPRUCE GROUSE on the 11th along MN Highway 1, about 0.7 miles southeast of the Spruce Road. Mike Hendrickson found a male SPRUCE GROUSE on the 14th along MN Highway 1, between mile markers 301 and 302. Mike also found 5 BOREAL CHICKADEES along the Spruce Road.
Jan Green relocated a HORNED GREBE on the 11th in Lake County at Flood Bay. Mike Steffes found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 11th on the west side of Gooseberry State Park south of Highway 61. The VARIED THRUSH, GRAY CATBIRD, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW are still being seen at a home in Silver Bay. Contact Jim Lind at jslind@frontiernet.net for directions to the home.
Mike Hendrickson found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 13th along the Hedbom Forest Road in northeastern Aitkin County, 2.6 miles west of the eastern gate. He found another in the Sax Zim Bog at the junction of the Overton Road (CR 980) and Owl Avenue (CR 202). He also found BOREAL CHICKADEES along the Arkola Road (CR 52) just east of Owl Avenue and along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211). He found SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on a lek along CR 29. On the 14th Mike found a flock of more than 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS near the junction of the North Tischer Road (CR 293) and the West Tischer Road (CR 10).
Al Schirmacher found eight SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in Aitkin County on the 11th along Kestrel Avenue (CR 16), 0.5 miles south of Tamarack. He also found a COMMON GRACKLE in Palisade along CR 5.
