This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, March 1st, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

With two major snowstorms during the past week, there are very few sightings to report from the area. Mike Hendrickson relocated AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on February 23rd along the Hedbom Forest Road in northeastern Aitkin County. Mike also relocated the SNOWY OWL in the Duluth Port Terminal on the 23rd and the 24th, as well as a first-cycle ICELAND GULL at the Superior landfill and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS along the West Knife River Road (CR 231), about a mile west of the Homestead Road (CR 42). Jan Green saw a flock of 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS along the McQuade Road (CR 33) near MN Highway 61.

Warren Nelson reported a GREAT GRAY OWL last weekend near the junction of U.S. Highway 169 and Aitkin County Road 3 about fifteen miles north of the town of Aitkin. A VARIED THRUSH is coming to the feeders of Lael Carlstrom at 211 4th Street Northeast in the town of Aitkin.
