This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 17th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A RED-THROATED LOON was found by Joel Claus on the 15th at Park Point in Duluth, between the recreational area and Lafayette Square. Joel also saw a flock of 10 MARBLED GODWITS and 14 HUDSONIAN GODWITS on the 14th at Hearding Island. Terry Wiens saw seven AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 16th north of Duluth flying over Wild Rice Lake. Jan Green saw a pair of RUDDY DUCKS at Park Point on the 12th.
A TRUMPETER SWAN was seen on the 14th south of Island Lake along the Abott Road (CR 238). MARSH WRENS and VIRGINIA RAILS were found on the 11th along the railroad tracks at Mud Lake in Gary New-Duluth. Mike Hendrickson reports at least two pairs of RED CROSSBILLS in the area near St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Gary-New Duluth.
Other recent spring arrivals in the area include LEAST SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, WARBLING VIREO, and AMERICAN REDSTART on the 11th, WILSON'S WARBLER on the 12th, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER and INDIGO BUNTING on the 14th, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER on the 15th, and TENNESSEE WARBLER on the 16th.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Sunday, May 20th, to report on the results of the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory St. Louis County Big Day. A compilation brunch for the Big Day and the Great Minnesota Birdathon will be held at the Lakewood Town Hall at 3110 Strand Road at 9:00 AM.
