This is the Duluth birding report for Thursday, March 12th, sponsored by the MOU. Even though the weather is now warmer most of the winter specialties still are present in and around Duluth.
Three more BOREAL OWLS have been seen: one in Duluth, one on Cloquet Road west of Proctor and one was found dead. A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen again near Miller Hill Mall in Duluth as was the one in the Sax-Zim Bog area, that is, along County Road 319 1 mile east of County Road 7. Another was seen along US 53 2 miles south of Cotton and another near Kelsey.
At least 8 GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen in around the Sax-Zim Bog area. Another was seen in Carlton County.
The GYRFALCON was still being seen in the Duluth-Superior Harbor, especially near the Cargill Elevator with the best time between 3-4 pm.
SPRUCE GROUSE were appropriately seen along the Spruce Road in Lake County 0.4 mile up the road where a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was also seen. Another SPRUCE GROUSE was seen farther along the road.
HOARY REDPOLLS were seen in two locations.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were also seen in at least 3 locations.
