This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 10, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. The birding in Duluth and vicinity continues to be as eventful as it was last week, and of particular interest were sightings of LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, PARASITIC JAEGER, LONG-EARED OWL and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER.

On September 6, a juvenile LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was carefully identified at the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area along with five other species of shorebirds. As mentioned on last week's tape, the main pool at 40th is dry, but there is a smaller area with water and mudflats to the right or southwest of the main pool.

Karl Bardon of the Twin Cities saw two adult light-morph PARASITIC JAEGERS on September 7. One of these was on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry breakwaters at the southern tip of Park Point, and the other was at Gull Bluff which is just east of the Superior landfill at the southern end of Wisconsin Point.

On the same day, Karl also had an excellent concentration of eighteen species of warblers in the trees at the 40th Avenue West area.

On September 8, a LONG-EARED OWL was unexpectedly seen at the Hawk Ridge Banding Station, but the banders were unable to net it.

And an early migrant BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen at Stoney Point September 6.

Other birds of interest reported recently include SWAINSON'S HAWK migrating past Hawk Ridge on September 4 and 5, a SANDHILL CRANE at the Ridge September 7, the first migrant AMERICAN PIPIT and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS in Duluth also on the 7th, and some LAPLAND LONGSPURS at the Park Point Recreation Area yesterday.

The hawk flight the past few days over Hawk Ridge has been on the slow side, but there was a good flight September 6 with a total of 2576, which included 1275 BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 788 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 349 AMERICAN KESTREL, 68 NORTHERN HARRIER, 36 OSPREY and 27 BALD EAGLE.

The flight at the Ridge should be good tomorrow, the 11th, with northwest winds and cooler temperatures in the forecast, but the wind forecast for Saturday and Sunday is still unclear.

Finally, note that our annual Hawk Weekend activities will be next weekend, September 18, 19 and 20, with 7:00 am birding field trips to various locations in Duluth both Saturday and Sunday, nature hikes at Hawk Ridge also on both Saturday and Sunday, and programs at the UMD Chemistry Department Auditorium, Room 200, both Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 8:00 pm. Be sure to note that this is a change of location from previous years. The best place to park would be Parking Lot B off College Street on the south side of the UMD Campus and follow the signs to Chemistry 200. For more information about this weekend, either give me a call @ 525-6930 or call Dave Benson @ 728-5812.

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported on immediately, the next scheduled update of this tape will be Thursday, September 17.
