Hello, this is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 11, 1999, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

There have been no recent reports of Great Gray Owl or Northern Hawk Owl, but there are two SNOWY OWLS being seen consistently in Duluth and Superior. One of them is at the Murphy Oil Refinery along Hill Avenue in Superior and the other has been seen in the vicinity of the Blatnik, or "High Bridge," and can be seen most often out on the harbor ice between the High Bridge and Barker's Island in Superior.

A PEREGRINE FALCON has been seen by several observers at various points in Duluth, generally near the harbor in the past week.

And that OLDSQUAW is still along the lakeshore; it has been seen as far west as 21st Ave. East as well as at Brighton Beach during the past week.

SPRUCE GROUSE have been seen by a number of observers in Lake County near the vicinity of the junction of County Road 2 and Highway 1 -- as far south on County Road 2 as seven miles south of Highway 1 and for several miles in both directions from the junction with County Road 2, on Highway 1.

Also in that area, on Feb. 7, a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen on the Spruce Road one mile from the junction with Highway 1.

Birders from that area also report good numbers of EVENING GROSBEAKS and a few flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS including at least one HOARY REDPOLL.

In the Sax-Zim Bog area, there are good numbers of RUFFED GROUSE, and a few NORTHERN SHRIKES, as well as small groups of REDPOLLS. Along Owl Avenue, County Road 202-203, there haven't been any reports of owls recently, but there have been WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and BOREAL CHICKADEES.

There have been reports this past week of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the Morgan Park area as well as in Ely, MN.

The next scheduled update of this tape will be on Thursday, Feb. 18.
