Also present were a first-winter ICELAND GULL, a first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL, a first-winter and an adult THAYER'S GULL and many HERRING GULLS. A JAEGER was also reported from Grand Marais over the weekend; this would be one of the latest records ever in Minnesota for a jaeger.
A first-winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was reported today by Dave Krekorian on Lake Superior at 21st Avenue East in Duluth.
The first NORTHERN HAWK OWL of the season was found by Katie Ward on the 17th at the soccer fields on Jean Duluth Road. The bird was seen again on the 18th.
Back in Grand Marais, a SNOWY OWL was in the harbor on the 15th, and TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were at Croftville and in the campground in the harbor. Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen by Dan Floren at Horseshoe Bay, 1.5 miles east of Hovland, and another right in Hovland.
Alison Clarke had two NORTHERN CARDINALS in the 3400 block of East 4th Street in Duluth on the 14th. There are good numbers of RED CROSSBILLS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and PINE GROSBEAKS in the Duluth area.
At Hawk Ridge, the second BOREAL OWL of the season was caught at the Research Station on the night of the 16th, and there were good November flights on the 12th, 13th, and 14th. Counter Frank Nicoletti reported 193 raptors on the 12th, 244 on the 13th, and on the 14th, the total of 226 raptors included one SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 21 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 33 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and 14 GOLDEN EAGLES. Frank also saw a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER on the 14th. Kim Eckert saw a MERLIN on the 15th in the 1900 block of Kent Road.
Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, the Duluth Birding Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on November 25th. The phone number is (218) 525-5952, and callers can leave a message if they wish after the tone at the end of the tape. Also note that a message can be left without having to wait for the birding report to end: after the tape starts playing, push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will then stop, the tone will sound and you can leave your message.
