This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 22nd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On the 18th, Jim and Sharon Lind found a WESTERN TANAGER near the Taconite Harbor boat launch in Cook County. On the same day, they saw a WHIMBREL flying down the shore, also in Cook County. The following day they reported a CAROLINA WREN on the lighthouse trail in Two Harbors, Lake County. The bird has not been seen since.
On the 19th, Forest Strnad reported a MISSISSIPPI KITE in Hennepin County at the junction of state highway 62 and Shady Oak Road. The bird was seen only briefly as flew over the road and out of sight.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS have begin their southward movement out of the state and a few other species such as RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER have also been on the move. Several species of warbler have been reported well south of their breeding range, and these include PINE WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and MAGNOLIA WARBLER.
Finally, I have a second hand report of a possible LITTLE STINT seen briefly near the Split Rock River on the shore of Lake Superior in Lake County on August 20th. After parking at the wayside rest southwest of the state park entrance, cross state highway 61 on the north side of the river and hike around the first point on your left. To my knowledge this bird has not been seen since its initial report, and I have no information on how this bird was identified and why it wasn't one of the more expected species.
